OBDII Trouble Code Library Definitions

Trouble code protocol is OBD2 EOBD  Petrol 2001 Diesel 2004

January 1st 2001 all new petrol engine vehicles should be equipped with EOBD.
January 1st 2004 all new diesel engine vehicles should be equipped with EOBD.

Note: OBD II oxygen sensor designation

Bank 1 is the side of the vehicle that the 1 cylinder is on.


Bank 2 is the side of the vehicle that the 2 cylinder is on.

Sensor 1 means that it's the first sensor in line (i.e the one at the manifold)
Sensor 2, 3, etc are each next sensor as they placed from the engine to the end of the vehicle.

B1S1= driver side upstream
B2S1= passenger side upstream
B1S2= after Y, ahead of cat-converter
B1S3= post cat-converter

4- Cylinder Engines Pre-cat sensor (B1 S1)
Post-cat sensor (B1 S2)

6-8 Cylinder Engines Bank 1 (Passenger Side) Bank 2 (Driver Side)
Pre-cat sensor (B1 S1) Pre-cat sensor (B2 S1)
Post-cat sensor (B1 S2) Post-cat sensor (B2 S2)

This is standard SAE for OBD2.
The O2 at the outlet of the exhaust manifold for cylinders 1, 3, 5, 7 is B1S1, the O2 at the outlet of the exhaust manifold for cylinders 2, 4, 6, 8 is
B2S1, the O2 after the "Y" in the exhaust, since it is fed by bank one becomes B1S2, the O2 after the cat, since it is fed by bank one becomes B1S3. Once the exhaust pipes join together at the "Y" bank two is no longer an identifier.

The first character shows which area of the vehicle generated the code.
P PowerTrain
B Body
C Chassis
U Network

The next Character can be a 0 or a 1, 2, 3
0 Standard (SAE) OBD code
1,2,3 Manufacturers own code


If the first character was P (PowerTrain) then the next will be a number
0 Fuel and Air Metering
1 Fuel and Air Metering
2 Injector Fuel and Air Metering Circuit
3 Ignition System and Misfire Detection
4 Auxilliary Emission Controls
5 Vehicle Speed control and Idle Control System
6 Computer Output Circuit
7,8,9 Transmission Related Faults

The last two numbers which will identify the specific fault by the onboard control system.
